Treatment Method for Abrasive Belt Prior to Use

Abrasive belt grinding belongs to a form of coated abrasive (commonly known as abrasive paper, sand cloth) grinding. As early as 1760, the first abrasive paper appeared in the world, but it was only limited to manual operation at that time. It was not until 1900-1910 that abrasive paper and sand cloth began to be used in machinery, and it was first applied to the wood industry in the form of a looped belt. This mechanical grinding method using a looped sand cloth is the prototype of abrasive belt grinding. After 1930, abrasive belt grinding gradually developed towards metal processing. In the Second World War, the United States first used abrasive belt grinding in weapons manufacturing, achieving significant results.

In the early 1950s, the introduction of the electrostatic planting method brought abrasive belt grinding to a new stage, and the application of abrasive belt grinding gradually became universal. Later, Europe and Japan also conducted research and application of abrasive belt grinding technology, and abrasive belt grinding technology gradually developed into an independent processing technology field with complete categories and a relatively complete technical system.

Abrasive belt treatment

Although abrasive belt storage is important, if the abrasive belt is not properly treated before use, it will still seriously affect its performance. Therefore, today I will introduce two treatments of abrasive belts before use:

Sandbelt suspension

Abrasive belts should be hung for at least 2-5 days before use to eliminate the curl caused by packaging. Hang the unpacked abrasive belt on a tube or a special abrasive belt support. The length of the tube should be greater than the width of the abrasive belt, otherwise the abrasive belt is easy to fall off or produce a trumpet mouth; the tube should be in a horizontal state, otherwise the edge of the abrasive belt is easily damaged. The environment temperature and humidity of the suspended abrasive belt should meet the storage conditions of the abrasive belt. The simplest way is to keep it dry in a sealed room with several light bulbs.

Visual inspection

After the abrasive belt is hung, the necessary visual quality inspection should be performed before use. Check whether the abrasive belt joint is flat and firm; whether there are holes, sand lumps, sand leaks, gum spots, and wrinkles on the surface of the abrasive belt; whether the edge of the abrasive belt is neat and whether there are cracks. If there are small cracks on the edge, they can be cut off (cut into an arc shape) without affecting the use.

Abrasive belt composition

A abrasive belt is a belt-shaped tool made of abrasive bonded to flexible materials such as paper and cloth with a binder, which can be used for grinding and polishing. It is a major form of coated abrasives. Its basic composition consists of three elements: substrate, abrasive and binder, collectively referred to as the three elements of abrasive belt structure.

Abrasive belt classification

Due to the differences in the three major components of abrasive belts and various characteristic factors, abrasive belts can be divided into many varieties according to different grinding objects, grinding conditions, and grinding requirements.
